Marble stone village which is located in the heritage site of the five Marble Mountains in Da Nang was found in the 18th century. Mother of Nature has endowed this place with an outstanding landscape as well as feng shui; besides, the various types of rocks have formed this special traditional village. In this article, we will learn about the Non Nuoc village in Da Nang city.
An artisan whose name is Huynh Ba Quat from Thanh Hoa set the stone village up. At the beginning, he just exploited the stone and turned it into simple tools to serve daily life such as mills, mortars, stone for boat mooring; and then gradually developed grave sculpture products, manufactured decorative products for temple and palaces such as stone lion statues, stone pixiu, etc.
Until now, his art works of stone still have high aesthetic value and demonstrate the artistic cultural of Vietnamese.
The next skillful artisan in the village is Huynh Ba Triem, who went to Hue - the ancient capital of Vietnam - to decorate the Royal palace and mausoleums. He learned how to make the tea cups in red marble which were imbued with the highest degree of art of the village at that time. However, the first one who used precious stones to sculpt statues is artisan Nguyen Chat. Two of his famous works are the two statues which have been worshiped in Hoa Nghiem and Tang Chon caves.
A stone carving artist of Non Nuoc village is completing his aesthetic work
After the country reunification, the talented sculptors gathered the stone villagers and formed the Non Nuoc Stone Carving Co-operative, which was active during the 1980s.
The Co-operative had only 130 members at that time, including 35 sculptors and the rest of them are unskilled labor. The raw materials was exploited inside the village and produced following their traditional experience.
Nowadays, Non Nuoc Stone Carving Village has become a significant traditional feature of Da Nang city, whose products are famous in both domestic and international markets. Stone carving has been the main job of people here, which not only brings the cultural value but also creates jobs for the people of this land.
