Located in Ha Dong District, Ha Noi, Van Phuc village in Ha Dong is famous for silk weaving which was used mostly by the ancient imperial court.
There are many stories about Van Phuc silk village’s history; however, the most popular one is said that the Mother of the village who came from Hangzhou, China followed her husband to the North-South wars, and then settled down in this village. She was so homesick that she decided to send her love into the sericulture and silk weaving career in the land lying beside Nhue river. As the time goes by, silk weaving became the “tradition” of many generations in this beautiful silk village.
Another theory is believed that silk weaving has its own history for thousand years ago which was taught by Ms La Thi Nga, a descent of Hung King. To remember her merit, villagers respect her as the Tutelary God, Patriarch of silk weaving, and take her date of birth (10th August of the Lunar calendar), and her date of death (25th January of the Lunar calendar) as the sacral and commemoration day.
