Van Lam village (Ninh Hai - Hoa Lu Hai) is located next to the center of Tam Coc - Bich Dong destination. Although nobody knows when its history began, villagers supposed it was set up thousand years ago. Legend has it that under the Tran dynasty, the King was stationed here and the Empress Tran Thi Dung opened embroidery classes to teach people in the region. Since then, this career has been transferred to the next generations, and increasingly developed.
Van Lam is a hamlet of Ninh Hai commune with 1,000 households and 3,000 inhabitants. Now, there is 100% of households and demographics do embroidery in this village. Both children from 7- 8 years old and the old from 70-80 years old can hold embroidery needle. However, people here not only do embroidery work but also earn their living by agriculture and provides services for tourists.
Mr. Le Van Thiem, the leader of the village, said: There are thousand types of embroidery products of this embroidery village such as bed sheets, curtains, towels, plates, interior decorations, etc. For household businesses, they sell to tourists or open their stores. For companies, products are mainly exported through contracts signed with foreign partners. Currently, the village has 7 embroidery companies. The companies not only open factories in the area but also through other forms of cooperation like processing, organizing product making places inside and outside the district. This approach not only ensures the progress, timing, quantity for customers, but also creates jobs for the local people at agricultural leisure time. In 2007, many companies developed quickly and gain high revenue such as: Pataco Business reached over 3 billions VND, etc. Embroidery household businesses’ revenues also reached about 20,000 VND /person/day, etc. The total value of the embroidery from the village in the past year is estimated at over 10 billions VND.

He also said that Van Lam village was recognized in 2006 by the province government. In 11/2007, Vietnam Association of Craft Villages recognized Van Lam as one of 12 typical villages of the country. The hamlet celebrated to welcome this noble title from Hanoi; hold a ceremony of artisan recognition for Mr. Chu Van Luong, 84 years old, and Mr. Dinh Van Uynh, 78 years old; and commended 3 typical embroidery companies namely Minh Trang, Pataco and An Loc Company.
Van Lam is following the statement of “ly nông bất ly hương” (which means: "leaving agriculture but not leaving home"), the people of Van Lam embroidery village develop both their traditional career and tourism services in their homeland. Located in the famous tourist destinations with thousands of tourists visiting, Van Lam can become a tourist village and create an ideal craft village tourism with its large production and sale area. Besides, the organization of anniversary occasions, village festivals, honoring artisans and embroidery companies, etc. is one of interesting activities to maintain and develop the traditional career.
Van Lam needs the attention and supports from all levels and sectors in upgrading the village into a tourist village, and maintaining and developing both scale and quality of products, etc. in order to attract more and more tourists to this traditional village.
