Hat is a thing used to shelter people from rain or sun. Since a long time, the image of Vietnam has been popular with Non La (palm-leaf conical hat). Although Non La is not the symbol of Vietnam, whenever tourists see a Non La, they think of our country. And the most famous destination of Non La is Hue conical hat village
Non La manufacture has appeared and developed in Hue for hundreds of years with many famous villages: Da Le, Phu Cam, Doc Son, Trieu Tay, Kim Long, Sia… Nowadays, the most popular villages like Tay Ho in Phu Ho commune, My Lam in Phu My commune, Phu Cam, Phuoc Vinh, Doc So, Trieu Tay, Huong So, Hue city launch millions of hats not only to meet the demand of people but also to be special souvenirs for tourists when visiting Hue. Non La Hue, especially a Non La with a poem is a real work art. To make a perfect hat, hat artisans must be through a lot of meticulous steps which requires diligence and skills from choosing frame, bending rim, roofing leaves, patterning to completing the hat and finally polishing. Maybe that is the reason why Non Hue is favored by many tourists.

Making frame is the very first step to make and decide the roundness, shape and size of a hat. The frame is made of light wood which is curved with plenty of sizes. Usually, a frame can be used in dozens of years if there is no change in model according to the trade demand. The rim is made of bamboo tree which is planted a lot in Hue. Each hat has 15 to 16 rims and people always say “16 rims of moon”. The leaves to make Non Hue are ordinary type but they are carefully picked and through many steps: stew, dry, dew and iron until the leaves have white-green color. Next are roofing leaves, patterning and mark the symbol between two leaf layers to make it balanced. When the sun shines, the pattern appears balanced with each other. The hiding symbols on Non La with poem are usually the images of Truong Tien Bridge, Ngu Binh Mountain, Ngo Mon, Phu Van Lau, Thanh Toan tile Bridge... accompanying with famous poems written about Hue which are cut by five-color glossy paper, very outstanding on white-green background of the hat.
Tourism is developing fast in Hue and Non La has been the favorite souvenir with Hue special culture. A lot of tourists only come here to see how Non La is made with their bare eyes and they are really excited when their names and photos are patterned on the hat. Non La is the first handicraft that is certified protection of geographical indication by Intellectual Property Department (Ministry of Science and Technology) in August, 2010.
